I live near Syracuse, New York so that is quite a distance from LA. I have been looking into places around my area but haven’t found anyone that seems reliable enough to take the film to. I guess my search will have to continue. I’m sure I will end up having to mail it out to someone but you have definitely helped with the answering of my question. I appreciate it!

I did a quick Yelp search in your area, there really doesn’t appear to be anything. Im kind of shocked. Id call camera stores and ask if they know of any film labs. Also, B&H in NYC I think does mail in.

I was wondering where you got your film developed from the sprocket rocker. I have been trying to find a place around where I live but cant find anywhere decent! or do you send them out?

In LA I go to Kodak Digital Imaging Center. They are amazing. Though Im not sure if youre in LA. I suspect not. There are a few places you can mail your film to. I think Kodak takes mail ins. Id give them a call. A&I in Hollywood has a pre-paid mailer service where you order film with them and it includes the cost of mailing it back for processing. Check that out HERE

I know a few photographers that use CVS or Walmart and just search around to find one that takes good care of their machines. I did that for a bit, but found it inconsistant. Most towns have one last hold out film processing place for grandmothers and what not.

That help?

How does the instax mini 25 compare to the 50s?

There are a few things that are different between then, but the lens in the 50s is a bit nicer and gives a bit sharper image at the focal point. There was a good comparison site that I read before that I just looked for and couldn’t find again for ya. If you compare them on B&H or something there are minor differences in features, focal length and controls. The ultimate sell for me was that with the 50s you can set the flash to “mountain mode,” whatever that is, and then cover the flash, which effectively allows you to turn it off the flash in low light. Its one of the silly limitations of instax mini that you can’t disable the flash. So thats how I get around it.

Derek, are you mainly using expired Kodak Porta 400 VC and Ilford 3200 films with the Sprocket Rocket? Love the shots.

I actually don’t use any expired film unless its just old film of mine that I found and forgot to use. I like the uncontrolled factor to be as contained as possible, which using lomo cameras is pretty high with just the camera, so adding the random effect of expired film feels like too much. So, long story short, I do shoot Kodak Portra 400 and Ilfored 3200, but all fresh. I love the color of the Kodak and I love the texture of the Ilford 3200.

Hey man. I’m thinking about picking a sprocket rocket. What’s your overall experience using it? Pros/cons? Etc…

I can give you a bit more of an in-depth explanation if you’d like, but the brief cliff notes are:

I love the look it gives, has a nice wide angle, great super wide aspect ratio, being a toy camera it gives a fun vibe to the shoot.

On the bad side: without lots of light you are pretty much in the close up flash range world. So thats limiting. The scanning of the images, because it has to all be done manually on a flat bed scanner, is time consuming. Also it eats film pretty quickly, and they tend to only last about 20 rolls. Im on my 3rd.

With all that said, I love mine. Its my favorite camera to shoot and I love the look and feel I get out of it.

Hows that? Does that help at all?
