“Posted like silent sentinels all around the town, stand thousands upon thousands of mortal men fixed in ocean reveries. Some leaning against the spiles; some seated upon the pier-heads; some looking over the bulwarks of ships from China; some high aloft in the rigging, as if striving to get a still better seaward peep. But these are all landsmen; of week days pent up in lath and plaster- tied to counters, nailed to benches, clinched to desks. How then is this? Are the green fields gone? What do they here?…It is the image of the ungraspable phantom of life; and this is the key to it all.” – Herman Melville

Recently Julie and I debated a move to Portland. I’ve lived somewhere in CA since I was 10 and the idea of leaving was both exciting and somewhat bothersome. Ultimately, after imagining a life in Portland Julie and I quickly realized that CA is our home. Coming back home, walking our neighborhood, going to our restaurants, seeing our friends that own all our local shops, we can’t help but feel at home where we are. It’s a odd thing that the prospect of abandoning your home can make you realize exactly how important your home really is to you. So here’s to my new mug that will serve as my daily reminder, and to you CA with all your wonky flaws and craziness, we love you just the same.
